Egypt is advancing efforts to develop a more sustainable aviation sector through investments in green hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh El Hefny said during the Egypt Green Hydrogen Forum 2026.
El Hefny participated in the forum, organised by the German Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK) in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), as part of the Egyptian-German Green Hydrogen Partnership (GH2P).
The event brought together government officials, international experts, and representatives from the aviation, energy and maritime sectors to discuss the role of green hydrogen and sustainable fuels in reducing carbon emissions.
Speaking during a high-level session titled “Fueling the Future – Green Hydrogen for Maritime and Aviation Fuels,” El Hefny said Egypt is working to accelerate the transition towards lower-emission aviation and expand the adoption of clean energy solutions in line with Egypt Vision 2030.
He noted that green hydrogen and SAF are increasingly becoming central to the future of global transport, adding that the ministry’s strategy focuses on gradually expanding the use of sustainable fuels while reducing the aviation sector’s carbon footprint.
According to the minister, Egypt has already begun implementing several sustainability initiatives, including increasing the use of solar energy at airports and coordinating with the ministries of petroleum and electricity to encourage investment in SAF production.
El Hefny also revealed that the civil aviation sector is studying plans to establish a new SAF production facility as part of wider efforts to localise low-emission aviation industries and support technology transfer.
He added that Egypt’s strategic geographic location, infrastructure and renewable energy resources position the country to become a regional hub for green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel production.
The minister further stressed Egypt’s commitment to implementing environmental standards issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as part of efforts to align the sector with global sustainability requirements.
On the sidelines of the forum, the tourism and aviation committee at the German Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce held talks with El Hefny on potential cooperation in tourism and aviation, including airport development, improving passenger experience, and strengthening Egypt’s competitiveness as a tourism destination.
