Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty condemned “horrific atrocities and violations” in Sudan’s El Fasher and Kordofan on Tuesday, while calling for an immediate, comprehensive ceasefire and the establishment of unhindered humanitarian access. During a meeting in Cairo with Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mohieddin Salem, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s rejection of any attempts to partition Sudan or infringe upon its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The discussions centered on securing a comprehensive settlement to the Sudanese crisis within the framework of the strategic relations between the two countries.
Addressing regional coordination on the Nile water file, the two ministers explicitly rejected unilateral measures that could harm the interests of downstream nations. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to their historic water rights and stressed the necessity of adhering to relevant rules of international law to ensure mutual benefit and safeguard the water security of all Nile Basin peoples.
Abdelatty emphasised the urgency of launching an effective humanitarian path to ensure aid reaches those in need, alongside increased relief support and strengthened cooperation with the United Nations, the African Union, and international relief agencies. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tamim Khallaf stated that the talks highlighted the need for integrated regional and international efforts, specifically the work of the international Quartet Mechanism for Sudan. Abdelatty also referenced the fifth meeting of the consultative mechanism recently hosted by Cairo, which served as a platform to unify international visions for a humanitarian truce and a Sudanese-owned political process.
The meeting was held following directives from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and the Chairperson of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, to enhance bilateral consultation. Abdelatty stated that Egypt stands in full solidarity with the Sudanese people in the face of current challenges. Minister Salem expressed Sudan’s appreciation for Egypt’s political and humanitarian role, specifically citing Cairo’s tireless efforts in providing medical and relief aid, and underscored the importance of continued close coordination to restore security and stability across the country.
