The Peruvian Embassy in Cairo recently hosted a vibrant celebration of cultural exchange, featuring a captivating performance by the APU INKA ensemble—an acclaimed group dedicated to preserving traditional Peruvian folk music through indigenous instruments. This marked the ensemble’s debut in Egypt, underscoring the embassy’s ongoing efforts to promote Peruvian heritage abroad.
Founded in 2008 in Atlanta by Peruvian artist John Zoria, APU INKA is renowned for reviving the musical traditions of the Andes. Using authentic instruments such as the quena (Andean flute), zampoña (panpipes), charango (a small lute-like string instrument), and a variety of native drums, the group creates an immersive experience that brings Peru’s rich cultural history to life.
In his welcoming speech, Peruvian Ambassador Miguel Alemán Urteaga expressed his enthusiasm for hosting such a unique cultural showcase. He emphasized the power of folklore to foster mutual understanding and friendship between nations, affirming the embassy’s dedication to strengthening cultural ties through events like this.
The evening drew a diverse and distinguished audience, including foreign diplomats from Slovenia, Lebanon, Portugal, Uruguay, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cuba, and Chile. Notable Egyptian figures also attended, such as renowned artist Khaled Selim; Khaled El-Anany, Egypt’s UNESCO candidate; and Hatem Amer, Assistant Minister of Health and Population. The audience also included intellectuals, business leaders, and students of Spanish language and Latin American culture.
APU INKA’s performance transported attendees to the highlands of the Andes with a dynamic blend of rhythmic intensity and melodic intricacy. Between musical pieces, the performers shared insights into the cultural roots and stories behind each instrument and song, deepening the audience’s appreciation of Peru’s folkloric traditions.
