The Israeli military said a Hezbollah operative hurled a Molotov cocktail at the border with Israel on Sunday, causing light damage to a culvert near the border fence.
An Israeli military spokesperson said in a statement that the incident took place at the border near Metula, Israel’s northernmost city, and the assailant identified was known to the Israel Defence Forces.
Israel’s state-owned Kan Bet Radio reported that the Israeli troops had fired “warning shots” at the assailant.
The incident comes four days after Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant issued a strong warning to Hezbollah during a tour along the Israeli-Lebanese border amid weeks of friction between Israel and the Iranian-backed armed group.
Israel has intensified its rhetoric following a roadside bomb in March that injured an Israeli Arab man. Israel alleges that Hezbollah orchestrated the attack by sending a militant to plant the bomb. However, Hezbollah has not claimed responsibility for the incident.
The last major conflict between Israel and Hezbollah took place in 2006, mainly on Lebanese territory.
