Egypt’s Press Syndicate started receiving applications, on Thursday, from potential candidates in the midterm elections, which will be held on 5 March.

The syndicate will continue to receive nominations until 12:00 on 22 February.

Al-Akhbar newspaper journalist Ali Halabi and Al-Gomhoria newspaper journalist Doaa Al-Naggar submitted their nomination papers for the “underage seat”, to the committee overseeing the midterm elections.

Al-Naggar said, in press statements, that she decided to run for the syndicate elections this session in order to serve her fellow journalists and gain their confidence. This comes at a time when the profession faces great challenges, and needs to restore the strength and influence of the syndicate’s general assembly.

She also said that hopes to be the number 10 member who reaches membership in the Council of the syndicate, pointing out that it is strange that women are not represented in the syndicate’s council for two consecutive terms.

A total of 24 journalists applied during the first day of the candidacy submissions window being opened, including four candidates for the president’s seat. A further 20 have applied for membership, including six over age and 14 under age. The committee will continue its nomination papers for a period of five days, starting from Thursday until 22 February.
