Egyptian government works on raising efficiency of chest, fever hospitals

Egypt’s Minister of Health Hala Zayed and Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Shaarawi have agreed to intensify their efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), as the country expects to witness a second wave of the disease. 


The two ministers met virtually on Saturday, in the presence of representatives of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), the Ministry of Finance, and other officials. 

The two ministers agreed on the measures needed to raise the efficiency of all chest and fever hospitals across the country.

Chest and fever hospitals have played a major role in the fight against COVID-19. The government transferred some of these hospitals to quarantine facilities.

Governors of Cairo, Giza, Qalyubia, Alexandria, Beheira, Menoufia, Kafr El-Sheikh, Sharqia, Fayoum, Beni Suef, Minya, Assiut, and Qena also attended the meeting. 

During the meeting, Zayed and Shaarawi followed up on the progress of the CBE’s EGP 1.4bn initiative to support the health sector in Egypt.

The initiative includes purchasing required medical equipment, raising the efficiency of hospitals especially chest hospitals, as well as providing ventilators and oxygen cylinders.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate (EMS) announced on Saturday that the total fatalities among Egypt’s doctors from the novel coronavirus have increased to 233 deaths, with thousands of infections reported. 

The EMS has been calling for greater protection of Egypt’s healthcare professionals, demanding the provision of PPE andPCR tests for healthcare workers, and excusing the elderly and pregnant medical workers from direct contact with coronavirus patients.

Egypt reported, on Friday, 464 new coronavirus cases and 23 new fatalities, bringing the country’s total to 120,611 cases and 6,877 deaths, with 104,499 recoveries.
