Egypt’s New Administrative Capital (NAC) is currently Huawei’s strategic customer in the Egyptian market due to its massive investment opportunities, according to Michael Lee, head of corporate group at Huawei North Africa.

Lee also said that the Egyptian government is undertaking large investments in the country’s telecommunications sector, as seen in its development of the NAC.

The major national project’s is being constructed to include modern infrastructures, such as smart roads and data centres, which include a significant technological segment.

He added that the Egyptian government has an ambitious plan to implement a digital transformation across the country, in a similar vein to that seen in China.

This is most significantly seen in the Asian country’s transformation of the small village of Shenzhen into the largest centre for electronic industries and technology in the world, in just 30 years.

Lee noted that, though new cities in Egypt represent significant investment opportunities, older and underdeveloped cities must also undergo technological developments of their own.

He said that Huawei has a vision to develop old cities according to this remit, and has already developed a plan to do so that it will present to the Egyptian government for review.

According to Lee, many technology solutions have been applied in some cities and gated residential compounds in cooperation with a number of real estate developers, such as the Talaat Moustafa Group (TMG).

He said that the Egyptian government has made requests for urban technological solutions to be presented, based on high quality, competitive prices, and ease and speed of implementation.

The NAC, as well as other new cities such as New Alamein, will contribute to transforming Egypt into a great country. This is particularly due to the national project having opened the country up to huge investment opportunities in the telecommunications sector with its increased focus on using technology as part of its day-to-day functions.

Alongside its work in the NAC, the company has provided its solutions to a number of government sectors, of which the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has been at the forefront.

Lee added that Huawei has also provided network solutions to Egypt’s banking sector, in the form of modern technology and Wi-Fi 6 uses.

He said that there is a general global trend towards putting in place technologies and solutions for digital transformation. About 170 companies now have strategies for this, and about 20 countries have strategies for relying on artificial intelligence (AI) technology, thanks to the interest in digital transformation.

“We see Egypt as one of the leading countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, which has a distinguished infrastructure and is working to digitally transform its economy,” Lee said, “Egypt has focused all government initiatives on strengthening and developing the infrastructure for the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, and is working to establish a culture of digitisation in society.”

He added that Huawei’s business in Egypt is a major focus of the company’s future business plans in the MENA region, and the company confirms its commitment in the Egyptian market.

It works to provide advanced technological solutions aimed at empowering companies and institutions in all sectors and industries, to support the country’s move towards a digital transformation.

He highlighted the close cooperation between Huawei and government and private institutions, which will enable the realisation of Egypt’s Vision 2030 in the field of information technology. It will also come up with new business models that are emulated globally, to enhance economic growth in the region.

“Huawei is not only a supporter of digital transformation, but it is also a positive practitioner, and provides fast and smart solutions in this field,” he said.

He said that Huawei aims to build a joint open and cooperative ecosystem with a full range of Wi-Fi solutions. It will ensure comprehensive coverage under different scenarios, so that companies can remain in constant communication and be able to face any new changes and developments.

He added that the Huawei Group aims to modernise the ICT concept through the adoption of pioneering technologies such as computing, AI, process automation, smart cities, robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other technological solutions that drive digital transformation.
