Egypt Foreign Minister, EU representative address cooperation on regional stability

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry has met with Olivér Várhelyi, the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, to discuss strategic relations between Cairo and the European Union (EU). 

During telephone discussions on Monday, the two diplomats emphasised the importance of the strategic relations between Egypt and the EU. They also discussed the need to work towards maximising the benefit from the Egyptian-European Partnership Agreement, to enhance development and economic cooperation between the two sides. 

In a statement by Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Ahmed Hafez, Shoukry expressed Egypt’s readiness to engage in tripartite cooperation with the EU and Africa. The two sides also addressed regional issues and common challenges facing Egypt and the EU.

The Egyptian initiative aims to support development efforts in a way that contributes to enhancing security and stability in Africa, whilst also preserving the interests of both sides.

For his part, Várhelyi said that Egypt plays a pivotal and effective role in achieving stability and security in the region. He added that the EU relies on coordination and cooperation with Egypt for resolving the crises in the region.
