The Ministry of Finance has announced that individuals will be obliged to submit their tax returns via the Egyptian Tax Authority website, starting from January 2021.

According to a ministry statement on Wednesday, the decision comes as part of amendments to some provisions of the executive regulations under the Income Tax Law.

The decision defines the “individual” as someone who engages in commercial, industrial, professional, real estate, or investment activities in financial markets, bonds, or treasury bills. They will be able to submit their tax return via www.incometax.gov.eg.

The Ministry of Finance statement also revealed that submitting tax returns electronically had previously been “optional” for normal individuals.

“This step comes as part of the government’s general direction, and in completion of the comprehensive development plan of the Egyptian Tax Authority,” the Ministry of Finance said.

It added that the main route the authority will take in its comprehensive development plan is linked to digital transformation.

The ministry’s statement pointed out that the Integrated Communications Center at the tax authority receives financial inquiries via the hotline 16395 and the e-mail [email protected]. It ensures that it interacts with queries immediately, contributing to greater tax awareness and overcoming any obstacles that the tax community may face.
