Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has been the subject of a failed assassination attempt during his stay in Alexandria, TV anchor Amr Adib unveiled on his talk show, aired on the privately run MBC Masr TV channel.

During the talk show on Monday, Adib aired a video showing confessions of two people believed to be members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood’s military wing Lewaa El-Thawra (The Revolution Brigade). The confessions indicated that they were assigned to monitor the presidential residency in Alexandria and prepare a report on the president’s movements.

Adib unveiled that both suspects rented an apartment in a building overlooking the presidential residency to do their mission. He also aired other videos from inside the apartment showing the suspects using cameras and modern equipment to monitor the movements of the president and his family inside the residency.

“Both members rented an apartment in a property 1.5km away from the presidential residency,” Adib noted.

Adib said the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist group had planned three or four previous attempts to assassinate the president, referring to the 2015 media reports about an assassination attempt against President Al-Sisi while he was at the presidential residency in Mamoura, Alexandria, during which a security officer was killed at the time.

He explained that as a result of those assassination attempt, the state decided to apply strict security measures at the aforementioned presidential residency after it turned out to be exposed and unsafe, noting that full secrecy was imposed on the movements of the president and his family.

The two defendants from the video, Ahmed Imam and Mahmoud Hani Qabalan, also confessed that they received military training in monitoring and surveillance, using modern cameras to carry out their mission.

Adib confirmed that the security succeeded in arresting the defendants with surveillance cameras in their possession, noting that the Brotherhood’s leading figures, who fled the country, were behind the plan of the assassination attempt.

In the same context, Yasser Rizk, editor of the state-run newspaper Akhbar Al-Youm, said recently during a television interview that President Al-Sisi was the subject of multiple assassination attempts on 30 June 2013 and then on 3, 24, and 26 July of the same year.

He explained that there is “a Rumor war” that targets the Egyptian army for its stances and solidarity with the Egyptian people’s demands against the outlawed Brotherhood group.
