Banks issued over 31m e-payment cards in Egypt by end-2018: CBE

The banks operating in the Egyptian market had issued 31.114m electronic payment cards by end of December 2018, according to the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE).

The cards are divided into 3.975m credit cards, 15.439m debit cards, and 11.7m prepaid cards.

The CBE pointed out that the top five banks operating in the market alone accounted for 74.239% of the total credit cards, 67.368% of the debit cards, and 87.837% of the prepaid cards.

The top 10 banks held 81.23% of the total credit cards, 81.30% of the debit cards, and 90.333% of the prepaid cards.

Meanwhile, the number of ATMs of banks reached about 12,200 in December 2018.

The top five banks have 8,328 ATMs, equivalent to 68.2621% of the total ATMs, while the top 10 banks have 9,635 ATMs, equivalent to about 78.975% of the total ATMs.

The CBE pointed out that the number of POS [points of sale] in the Egyptian market reached about 77,479 devices in December 2018, of which the top 10 banks have 73,879 POSs, equivalent to 95.353%.
