Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly issued on Monday the executive regulations of the National Press Authority.
The eight-article regulations allow the authority to create a mechanism to follow up on the economic and administrative performance of national press institutions, and to formulate regulations governing the appointment of chairpersons of these press institutions.
President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has ratified the law last September, while parliament has approved it a year ago, to allow the authority to supervise the performance of the press institutions, along with their financial and administrative activities.
The authority is assigned to supervise all national press institutions and take required measures to develop their assets and ensure their independence and adherence to professional standards.
There are also other authorities; the Supreme Media Council and the National Media Authority which regulate the workflow of the press and media in Egypt. They were established to supervise all Egyptian media outlets. However, each body has a separate role. The National Media Authority is responsible for supervising radio and media broadcast, the National Press Authority is responsible for supervising state-owned newspapers, and the Supreme Media Council is responsible for overseeing the two authorities.
The creation of the three bodies was approved by parliament in December 2016 and ratified by President Al-Sisi in April 2018.
