Al-Sisi heads to Tokyo to meet Emperor, Prime Minister until Wednesday

President's visit is the first of its kind in more than a decade

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi will head to Japan Sunday until Wednesday to meet Emperor Akihito and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe.

The visit is considered the first of its kind in more than a decade following the last Egyptian presidential visit to Tokyo in 1999. Al-Sisi’s current visit to Tokyo is part of a tour in Asia, which includes Kazakhstan and South Korea.

In an interview with a Japanese newspaper in Cairo last week, published Sunday, Al-Sisi reviewed a few issues of concern between both countries including the war on terrorism.

“The prevalence of terrorist groups imposes a threat on all of humanity and the world should unite against it through a comprehensive vision that tackles security, ideological, and economic aspects of terrorism,” he said.

Regarding the anticipated bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Japan, he suggested it focuses on areas of renewable energy resources and healthcare. Moreover he suggested cooperation in education by sending 100,000 Egyptians to study in Japan.

Al-Sisi met Kazakhstani president Nursultan Nazarbaye Friday and said Egypt is looking forward to increasing the number of Kazakhstani tourists visiting Egypt after they launch a direct airline between Cairo and Astana from March.
