Ministry of Interior serious about real change of policy: Abdel Ghaffar

Abdel Ghaffar told the police chiefs during the meeting that reform efforts should accumulate over time

Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel Ghaffar met on Tuesday night with members of the high council of police to discuss plans to implement new procedures following the minister’s meeting with Prime Minister Sherif Ismail.

Abdel Ghaffar told the police chiefs during the meeting that reform efforts should accumulate over time and that achieving security discipline should come through an inclusive strategy that includes habituation.

The minister asserted that the ministry’s plan will include reassessing the security performance of the ministry’s agencies.

Ismail met on Monday with Abdel Ghaffar and top officials of the ministry to address recent cases of police abuse. Ismail revealed that legislations will be drafted to help the organisation of the relationship between police and citizens, claiming these pieces of legislation will be discussed among cabinet members in its first meeting next month.

The minister of interior stressed in the meeting with the police leaders that “the ministry is serious regarding achieving real change in the security policy.”

A string of cases of police abuse occurred last week, most prominent among which include the killing of a driver by a policeman in Darb Al-Ahmar district in Cairo. The driver’s death caused widespread public outcry against the police authority. However, the Ministry of Interior has repeatedly denied accusations of systematic and widespread abuses of state power.
