The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that two Egyptian fishermen have been rescued after a fishing boat sunk in Sudanese territorial waters on Saturday.

Twelve other fishermen on board the vessel at the time it sunk are reported missing. The ministry reported that the Egyptian consulate obtained information from authorities in Port Sudan indicating that 14 fishermen disembarked on board the vessel.

Egyptian Ambassador in Khartoum Osama Shaltout reported that President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi ordered a navy unit to be sent to the Sudanese waters late on Saturday to aid in the efforts to find the missing fishermen, according to state news agency MENA.

The fishing vessel Zainat Al-Bahrain sunk near the Sudanese-Eritrean border. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that it has been in contact with the Egyptian embassy in Asmara as a pre-emptive measure in the event that fishermen are swept onto Eritrean shores.
