Bomb explodes in Fayoum, no injuries

The explosion took place near Fayoum police station and damaged three cars

An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded Tuesday morning in Fayoum near the governorate’s police station. Losses were limited to three damaged cars that were parked in the area, state media MENA news agency reported.

The governorate of Fayoum has been witnessing frequent attacks during the past week.

On 8 August, a policeman was killed and three others were injured in an attack on a police vehicle.

The attack was claimed by the “Revolutionary Punishment” militant group on the same day, in a statement that went viral through social media networks. However, the statement said that the group killed two police officers. The authenticity of the statement couldn’t be independently verified.

On 4 August, an attack on Major General Sharif Sami’s car resulted in the death of his four year old daughter and his friend. Two days after, police forces located the alleged attackers’ hideout and killed all five suspects during an exchange of fire.

The frequency of militant attacks has been increasing during the past two years. A number of militant groups, including “Ajnad Misr” and “Revolutionary Punishment”, emerged following the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. The groups mainly target security personnel and facilities across Egypt.

“Ajnad Misr” claimed responsibility for a bomb explosion that occurred Monday near Heliopolis Court in Cairo that injured three police officers.
