The Ministry of Housing, represented by the Central Agency for Reconstruction, will inaugurate the Azmy and Contact Channel bridges in October and April. The inauguration of the bridges will coincide with the celebrations of the 6th of October and Sinai victories, Minister of Housing Mostafa Madbouly announced in a statement Sunday.

The two bridges will be linked to the Suez Canal Development Axis project. They are considered vital projects, and are currently being executed to support the development axis with a total cost of EGP 120m.

The EGP 60m Azmy Bridge will be 196 metres in length and will be replete with a foldable part. It will facilitate the passage of trucks to Port Said, which is difficult using the El-Raswa Ferry, according to Mohamed Nasser, Head of the Central Agency of Reconstruction.

He further clarified that the bridge will transport the trucks directly from Port Said Port to El-Raswa Ferry then to East Port Said Port. This is expected to reduce the journey time to approximately 70 minutes and prevent road accidents.

“The bridge will also contribute to solving the traffic jams problems caused by heavy transports, and trucks coming to and from Port Said Customs,” Nasser added.

He added that the project will be fully implemented by next September, for its inauguration during the October celebrations, coinciding with the operation of the “30 June Axis” that is included in the national roads project.

Mohamed Al-Saqa, Head of Sinai Reconstruction Device, part of the State Ministry for Administrative Development, said the second project will be a tree-lined bridge along the connecting channel between Manzala Lake and the Suez Canal.

The second bridge will cost EGP 66m and will be fully implemented next April, to be inaugurated as part of the Sinai liberation celebrations.

Last March, the Ministry of Housing announced it will complete the national plan for developing Egypt’s roads network by November 2015. The plan contains three roads as part of the government’s endeavours to expand on developments across the country.

The national plan of roads, which was announced last year, will see the implementation of 3,400 km of roads in one year, at a total cost of EGP 34bn.
