A policeman was killed and three others injured as result of an attack on a police vehicle in Fayoum on Saturday morning, according to state newspaper Al-Ahram.

The injured were transferred to hospital for further treatment.

The incident comes two days following the inauguration of the New Suez Canal by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Fayoum is among the cities witnessing frequent militant activities. Last week, unknown gunmen attacked a policeman’s car in Fayoum, killing his daughter and one other.

The insurgency has generally increased across Egypt since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, particularly in North Sinai.

A Croatian citizen was taken hostage by North Sinai militant group “State of Sinai” on 22 July in 6th of October City. The group released a video on the hostage last Wednesday, addressing the Egyptian government.

The group gave the Egyptian government an ultimatum of 48 hours to respond to their demands, which are “releasing all Muslim females from Egyptian Prison”, or they would kill the Croatian hostage.

“State of Sinai” pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in November.
