A police officer was killed in Gharbeya governorate on Saturday while trying to defuse an explosive device.

The officer, Mahmoud Al-Shafey, worked at the civil security forces. The bomb, found in an agricultural field in the district of Santa, exploded during the dismantle attempt, the interior ministry said.

The ministry added they have yet to identify who the assailants were, as they had already fled the scene.

A military funeral took place in Gharbeya on Sunday morning for the officer’s death amidst thousands of attendees, state-owned news agency MENA reported.

Homemade bombs and small IEDs have become a common occurrence, as small explosions occur weekly in Cairo and across Egypt.

Often, the explosions target police stations and sites with a heavy security presence, but they also target roads, electricity units, and telecommunications stores.

On Friday, a bomb explosion in the city of Mahalla injured one person who is believed to have planted the bomb.
