The Qatari Foreign Ministry voiced its “anxiety” regarding “evolving events” in Egypt following deadly clashes in a Wednesday statement.
The ministry expressed concerns about rising rates of civilian casualties as well as the continued detention of former president Mohamed Morsi by the armed forces since 3 July.
In the statement, Qatar claimed that the only solution to the “current crisis” had to be based on “dialogue in the context of national unity,” which cannot be achieved because the leaders of a “certain political faction” are currently under arrest and not party to the national reconciliation project.
Since the ousting of Morsi, many Islamists have protested and called for his reinstatement. On Monday, at least nine were killed in a pro-Morsi protest.
