Secretary Clinton set to visit after urging Morsy and leaders to resolve their differences

The announcement comes in the wake of Clinton's public statement on Tuesday in which she urged Egypt's Islamist president and the military to settle their differences

United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will visit Cairo as part of a larger Egypt trip on Saturday to meet newly-elected president Mohamed Morsy, as well as foreign minister Mohamed Kamel.

Clinton’s visit will also include a trip to the coastal city of Alexandria, where Clinton will speak at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and raise the American flag at the American Cultural Centre, officially upgrading the centre to a US consulate.

Clinton’s visit is not the first volley of support from the US. Earlier this week Deputy Secretary of State William Burns met with Morsy and said the US was “fully committed” to assistance for Egypt. US President Barack Obama has also formally invited president Morsy to visit Washington in the fall.

“We strongly urge dialogue and concerted effort on the part of all to try to deal with the problems that are understandable but have to be resolved in order to avoid any kind of difficulties that could derail the transition,” Clinton said during a meeting with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh.
