IAEA inspectors have given the green light for the construction of Egypt’s first nuclear power plant at a site on the Mediterranean coast, west of the city of Alexandria, news agencies reported on Saturday.

President Hosni Mubarak first announced plans to launch a number of nuclear power plants in Egypt in 2007.

He pledged to work closely with the UN nuclear watchdog agency, and said that Egypt was not seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

An international tender for the construction is expected in November 2010, with Russia signaling its readiness to take part, reported the Voice of Russia website.
