CAIRO: The Ministry of Health denied reports that Minister Hatem El-Gabali was summoned to the Prosecutor General’s office, stressing in a statement that his visit there was “friendly”.

Minister of Health Hatem El-Gabali paid Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud a “friendly” visit to discuss a number of matters related to the ministry, the statement said.

“The visit was not because he was summoned by the [Prosecutor General]. The visit lasted for 20 minutes and the conversation did not probe the free medical case,” the statement added.

Local news reports had claimed that El-Gabali visited the Mahmoud to discuss the latest development in the investigation into corruption and exploitation of public funds through the ministry’s free medical treatment program.

This comes after the Central Auditing Agency submitted a new report which condemns nine government officials for exploiting public funds in the same case.
