BAGHDAD: A Sunni imam was gunned down alongside two of his guards and a relative near his home and mosque in Baghdad on Wednesday, an interior ministry official said.

Imam Abdul Jalil Al-Khashab was killed by unknown gunmen early in the morning in Amriyah, a western district of the Iraqi capital, the official said.

The number of Iraqis killed in violence in April fell slightly month on month but was almost unchanged from 12 months ago.

Figures compiled by the health, interior and defense ministries showed that 328 people — 274 civilians, 39 police and 15 soldiers — died from attacks last month, only slightly fewer than the 355 killed 12 months ago.
