Egypt's H1N1 death toll reaches 48

CAIRO: The Ministry of Health announced Saturday three swine flu deaths, raising the death toll to 48 in Egypt.

The first victim was an 18-year-old pregnant girl from Qaluibiya who was admitted to the intensive care unit suffering from severe respiratory problems and was placed on a ventilator.

The second victim was a 58-year-old man from Daqahliya who was also suffering from serious respiratory problems, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

A 54-year-old man from Sohag, also suffering from diabetes passed away. He was admitted to a hospital after he was experiencing difficulty breathing.

Another swine-flu related death was reported on Friday after a 65-year-old man from Aswan passed away after being hospitalized, suffering from respiratory problems and put in the ICU on a ventilator.

The H1N1 virus in Egypt has to date infected over 4,000, 263 of which are receiving treatment while 3,822 have recovered.

The hike in fatalities from the virus has been attributed to the onset of the winter season.
