CAIRO: The retrial of a policeman convicted, in absentia, of the physical assault of a doctor in a courtroom will commence on Monday.

Ahmed Antar Ibrahim was sentenced to six years by the Damanhour Criminal Court for the August 2008 attack on Magda El-Adly, a psychiatrist with the El Nadim Center for the Rehabilitation of the Victims of Violence.

The attack took place in April 2008 in a courtroom in Kafr El-Dawwar, Beheira governate, where El-Adly was attending court proceedings in the case of two men allegedly tortured by Kafr-El Dawwar police officers.

In a statement issued yesterday El-Nadim says that during the trial police officers attempted to seize El-Adly’s handbag, which contained pictures showing injuries allegedly sustained during the attack by the police officers on the two men.

El-Adly was pushed down the courthouse stairs resulting in a dislocated shoulder and head injuries.

Ibrahim has the right to demand a retrial because he was convicted in absentia.
