CAIRO: Zamalek beat APR of Rwanda 2-0 on Sunday to reach the CAF Champions League second round with a 4-1 aggregate.
Mahmoud Fathallah opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with a well-placed penalty and substitute Sherif Ashraf doubled the lead 11 minutes from time.
The hosts failed to break through the Rwandan defense during the first 45 minutes. Although Mahmoud Abdul-Razeq Shikabala went close, the keeper deflected his free-kick with the tips of his fingers into a corner.
After the break the Whites intensified their attacks and got what they deserved when Mostafa Gaafar was tackled in the area earning a well deserved penalty. Fathallah broke the deadlock from the spot.
Captain Hazem Emam sent Sherif Ashraf clear and the latter dribbled past the keeper and secured the win with a left-foot strike.
Zamalek have set up a tough last 32 tie with Ivory Coast s Africa Sport, who went through at the expense of Benin s Tonnere.
