Unemployment rates drop to 8.3 percent, says report

CAIRO: Unemployment rates in Egypt have dropped from 11.7 percent in eight years time, according to a report by the Egyptian Centre for Economic Studies (ECES).

The State Information Service reported yesterday that the decline in unemployment recorded during the period from 1998 till 2006 was almost equal among men and women, according to the report handed over to Premier Ahmed Nazif.

According to ECES’s report, by the end of 2006 unemployment among women was less by 18.6 percent, compared with 4.7 percent among men.

The study shows an ebbing unemployment in rural areas, with nearly 5 percent decline. In urban areas the decline was between 10 and 11 percent

Greater Cairo, according to the study, is the only region where unemployment rates have not diminished during the given period.
