CAIRO: Egypt is to build new power lines to supply Palestinians in the impoverished Gaza Strip with electricity by next year, officials said Wednesday. The announcement came after two days of talks between a visiting Palestinian delegation and Egyptian officials in Cairo. The project includes a 200-kilowatt line running the 50 km from Al-Arish in Egypt s northern Sinai to the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian-Palestinian border and an underground line within the Gaza Strip. Omar Kittaneh, in charge of the Palestinian Authority s energy and natural resources, told AFP a joint committee had been formed for the project but it has been agreed that the Egyptians will supply their technical know-how. Everything should be ready by next year, said Kittaneh. Palestinians are largely dependant on Israel for their energy supplies, from petrol for vehicles to diesel for power stations. AFP
