A tanker carrying liquefied natural gas arrived in Egypt as a gift from Qatar, according to the Qatari News Agency (QNA). This would be the first of five shipments promised by Qatar, which seeks to help meet Egypt’s energy needs.

Egypt commonly witnesses high levels of energy consumption and repeated blackouts during summer periods. By providing these liquid gas shipments, Qatar aims to “help lighten the effect of the country’s fuel crisis,” reported QNA.

Port facilities are not yet capable of importing liquefied gas, but such shipments will allow authorities to allocate more of the fuel supplies to the local market.

QNA stated the tanker, named Detonator, which is owned by the Qatar Gas Transport Co. (Nakilat), left the Ras Laffan port Thursday.

The Detonator’s shipping capacity is 260,000 cubic metres and is mostly used to transport liquefied gas to Europe.
