Egypt’s new Criminal Procedure Law will take effect on October 1, 2026, as the Justice Ministry prepares to implement the legislation alongside a broader programme to digitise the judicial system, accelerate court proceedings and improve judicial efficiency.
President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi reviewed preparations for the law’s implementation during a meeting in New Alamein with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Justice Minister Mahmoud Helmy El-Sherif.
The justice minister presented the measures being taken ahead of the law’s implementation, as well as initiatives aimed at accelerating the resolution of court cases, reducing backlogs and enhancing judicial efficiency.
The digital transformation programme includes an integrated electronic system for managing proceedings before criminal courts, the implementation of a Unified Digital Justice Strategy, and the launch of a data-sharing platform connecting the Justice Ministry with judicial bodies.
Al-Sisi also reviewed progress on the “City of Justice” project in the New Administrative Capital, including its digital infrastructure and the technologies planned for its judicial facilities.
He called for the project to be completed according to schedule and stressed the need to apply the highest cybersecurity and digital sovereignty standards to protect litigants’ data.
The meeting also reviewed efforts to expand real estate registration and notarisation services. The Justice Ministry has signed cooperation agreements with the National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr to open 11 enhanced notarisation branches at premises belonging to the two banks.
The ministry has also deployed additional mobile notarisation vehicles operating under a one-stop-shop model and opened two new notarisation branches in Sohag and Minya offering remote services through the “I Want to Make a Power of Attorney” application.
Regarding family court services, officials reviewed an electronic linkage system operating through 38 offices at courts of first instance, allowing certain government services to be suspended for individuals who fail to make court-ordered alimony payments.
Al-Sisi directed the authorities to take all necessary measures to accelerate the enforcement of alimony rulings, while continuing efforts to digitise judicial services, reduce the burden on citizens and expedite the resolution of cases.
