Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi held a phone call on Wednesday with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, expressing Egypt’s solidarity with Greece over the devastating wildfires while discussing bilateral cooperation and regional developments.
According to the Egyptian presidency, Al-Sisi conveyed his condolences over the firefighters and pilots who lost their lives battling the fires and reaffirmed Egypt’s readiness to provide any assistance needed to support Greece’s efforts to contain the blazes.
Mitsotakis thanked Al-Sisi for the gesture, saying it reflected the close historical ties and strategic partnership between the two countries.
The two leaders reaffirmed the strategic nature of Egyptian-Greek relations and their commitment to building on the momentum achieved in recent years. They reviewed ways to strengthen cooperation in energy, electricity interconnection, investment and trade.
Al-Sisi welcomed progress on the Egypt-Greece electricity interconnection project, describing it as a strategic initiative supported by the European Union that will enhance energy security and deepen economic integration across the Mediterranean. He also praised the growing cooperation between the two countries in labour mobility and migration.
The call also covered regional and international developments, with both leaders expressing aligned views on the situation in the Middle East. They stressed the importance of reaching a comprehensive and peaceful agreement between the United States and Iran to reduce tensions, prevent further escalation, and preserve the security and stability of Arab states and the wider region.
Al-Sisi also reviewed Egypt’s efforts, in coordination with international mediators, to implement the Gaza ceasefire agreement and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave. He urged the international community, particularly European countries, to support these efforts and help ease the humanitarian crisis facing Gaza’s population.
Mitsotakis praised Egypt’s consistent support for political and diplomatic solutions to regional crises and affirmed Greece’s commitment to maintaining close coordination with Cairo on regional and international issues.
The two leaders agreed to continue consultations and coordination to promote security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the broader Middle East.
