Two protests were organised by male and female students on Wednesday by Students Against the Coup group (SAC) at Al-Azhar University.
Sarah Youssef, SAC female spokesman, said Central Security Forces based in front of the administrative building on the male students’ campus dispersed the protest organised by the male students.
Students were “arbitrarily arrested” students on campus and a number of “severe birdshot injuries” were reported, Youssef said.
“Security forces fired at the students from a short range,” she said.
The female students began the protest on the women’s campus, headed to Mustafa Al-Nahas Street, then retreated to the female dorms when security forces showed up, Youssef said.
Ministry of Interior Spokesman Hany Abdel Latif said last week that security forces are not based on campus at any university – not even Al-Azhar. Any protests inside universities will be dealt with once the university chairman allows forces inside, he said.
