A night of violent clashes between supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and the police and unidentified men left dozens dead and hundreds injured.

Beginning at 1am and continuing into the afternoon, Dr Mohammed Khalid, a general surgeon working at a field hospital at Raba’a Al-Adaweya Mosque, said he treated 50-60 patients with a variety of wounds, some critical.

“The first patients who came in were wounded by rocks and tear gas. There were some broken bones. Later people game in who were hit by live bullets.”

Protesters vowed to continue their sit-in.

“We’re here first to support the ideals of democracy,” said Fahdy Hamed, a petroleum engineer from Tanta. “Life here is very difficult in the sit-in, but we want to be here for the sake of democracy.”

The Ministry of Interior denied using live ammunition and stressed that officers and conscripts only used tear gas to stop Morsi supporters from barricading 6 October Bridge, which connects the east and west of Cairo.
