Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty received a phone call on Monday evening from his US counterpart, Marco Rubio, to discuss US President Donald Trump’s plan to stop the war in the Gaza Strip, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.
The foreign ministry spokesperson said the US secretary of state outlined the elements of Trump’s plan, which was presented on Monday and includes ending the Israeli war, releasing hostages, ensuring the delivery of aid, and preventing annexation or displacement.
Rubio said that Washington looks forward to intensifying and continuing joint coordination with Egypt in the coming period to stop the war, praising Egypt’s “leading role in achieving peace and stability in the region.”
For his part, Abdelatty expressed appreciation for President Trump’s “sincere efforts” to stop the war in Gaza and said Egypt welcomed these efforts. He expressed Egypt’s hope for a swift end to the war and a de-escalation of tensions to restore calm, stability, and security in the region.
In this context, the Egyptian minister stressed the need for humanitarian aid to be delivered in quantities commensurate with the humanitarian catastrophe, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, the non-annexation of the West Bank and its organic link to the Gaza Strip, and the prevention of any displacement of the Palestinian people from their land.
Abdelatty also emphasized the importance of creating a political horizon based on the two-state solution to meet the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, chief among them their right to self-determination and the establishment of their own state, which would achieve security, peace, and stability for both the Palestinian and Israeli peoples.
