The multinational military exercise Bright Star 25 officially began this week at Mohamed Naguib Military Base, co-hosted by US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Egyptian Armed Forces. The opening ceremony, held on 28 August, underscored the United States’ commitment to deepening security cooperation with Egypt and its international partners.

First launched in 1980, Bright Star is one of CENTCOM’s longest-running military exercises. Now in its 19th edition, Bright Star 25 will continue through 10 September 2025, focusing on collective defence readiness, counterterrorism operations, and enhanced regional security.

This year’s exercise is among the largest to date, drawing participation from more than 40 countries. Around 1,800 US military personnel are taking part alongside their Egyptian and international counterparts. Activities include command post and field training exercises, conventional and irregular warfare scenarios, as well as academic seminars and a senior leader symposium aimed at fostering strategic dialogue.

Brigadier General Patrick Clare highlighted the significance of the drills, stating: “Bright Star 2025 builds upon the enduring security partnership between Egypt and the United States, rooted in decades of cooperation on counterterrorism and regional defence.” He added that the exercise reinforces the shared commitment of Egypt, the US, and partner nations to advancing stability and military interoperability in the Middle East.

For both Cairo and Washington, Bright Star remains a cornerstone of bilateral defence ties. The exercise continues to serve as a platform for strengthening multinational cooperation and ensuring preparedness against evolving security challenges across the region.
