Chile has launched the construction of Line 9 of the Santiago Metro, a major project that will link the capital’s city centre with the southern commune of Puente Alto, according to Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

President Gabriel Boric inaugurated the construction works this week. The new line will stretch 27 kilometres, include 19 stations, and is expected to cut travel time along the route to just 35 minutes, benefiting an estimated two million people.

Representing an investment of $2.73bn, the line is scheduled to open in 2030. Officials said the project is also expected to create around 20,000 jobs during its development phase.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Boric stressed the social and economic impact of the expansion, describing it as a transformative step for residents’ daily lives.

The new metro line will run through eight communes: Recoleta, Santiago, San Miguel, San Joaquin, La Granja, San Ramon, La Pintana and Puente Alto.
