The BRICS group of nations represents the “global majority” and has evolved from an informal dialogue into an association capable of responding to global challenges with practical actions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
In an exclusive interview at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Zakharova said the BRICS unites a significant part of the world’s population and its members possess real leadership qualities.
“This is an association that has brought together representatives of the global majority under its umbrella, who through their work and achievements truly demonstrate leadership qualities and, accordingly, occupy leadership positions,” she said.
Zakharova added that the group’s achievements are based on “real facts” and do not require additional assessment.
“This is a group of countries that are the largest in terms of their territory, and in terms of population, and in terms of area, and in terms of achievements in science, technology, and culture,” she said.
Zakharova also commented on the significance of the forum, held at the TV BRICS studio in the Roscongress International Cooperation Area, calling it an established international platform for communication.
“Of course, the original meaning and core is economics, finance, exchange of opportunities, and search for partners. But this forum has long gone beyond a single topic,” she concluded.
The SPIEF is the largest business event held annually in St. Petersburg since 1997. It has been held under the patronage of the President of Russia since 2006 and brings together politicians, businesspeople and experts from dozens of countries.
