Cairo and Mansoura Universities won first place as the best environmentally friendly university for the year 2023, and Ain Shams University came in second place, in the second round of the competition that began in 2022.

The winning universities were selected based on field visits to ensure the application of environmental and sustainability standards, linking them to educational systems, scientific research, university infrastructure, energy and climate change standards, and waste and water management methods.

The criteria also included evaluating the level of management of environmental crises and disasters, means of transportation within the university, achieving the standard of environmental quality and the compatibility of the university’s sustainability plan with environmental legislation and international agreements.

A short list of 6 universities nominated to win the award was determined after announcing it studying their files, and then selecting the winning universities after visiting them in the field. Ain Shams.

In the celebration held on Saturday, during the meeting of the Supreme Council of Universities, Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, confirmed that the education and scientific research file is one of the most important files for achieving environmental preservation and sustainability. The minister appreciated the voluntary initiatives implemented at the university level to integrate the environmental dimension.

Fouad said that the Ministry of Environment works with various sectors, whether directly related to the consumption of resources such as energy, transport, water resources and agriculture, and indirect sectors such as youth, education and culture, which require various tools that help consolidate the concepts of the environment and sustainability among citizens.
