Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will hold talks with his counterpart Faisal Mekdad in Cairo on Tuesday, followed by a meeting of the Arab ministerial committee on Syria.

Mekdad paid a visit to Cairo last April, the first in more than 10 years.

During the visit, a bilateral meeting was held to discuss various aspects of bilateral relations and ways of enhancing them in a way that benefits the two brotherly peoples, in addition to a number of regional and international issues of common interest.

The talks focused on ways to help the Syrian people regain its unity and sovereignty over its entire territory and face the growing challenges, including efforts to recover from the devastating 6 February earthquake as well as efforts to achieve a comprehensive political settlement to the Syrian crisis.

Minister Shoukry stressed Egypt’s full support for efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement to the Syrian crisis as soon as possible under Syrian ownership and under UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

Shoukry stressed Egypt’s support for the efforts of the UN Special Envoy to Syria and the importance of completing the measures related to achieving national consensus among the Syrians and building confidence and continuing the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee.
