The Major Group for Children and Youth (MGCY) met with the Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations in New York, on Friday. This came on the sidelines of the Economic Social Council (UN ECOSOC) Youth Forum 2023.

On behalf of the Major Group for Children and Youth, mandated constituency member, Ahmed E. Elsabagh, ECOSOC Youth Forum Global Focal Point thanked Ambassador Osama Abdelkhalek and the Permanent Mission of Egypt on co-facilitating the intergovernmental process that established the UN Youth Office along with Guyana and the Secretary-General Envoy on Youth—a milestone praised by many major youth-led and youth-focused constituencies worldwide. On 8 September 2022, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution A/RES/76/306 to establish a United Nations Youth Office.

During the meeting, Elsabagh praised Egypt for its concerted efforts to recognize the “World Youth Forum” held in Egypt as an international platform at the United Nations, in recognition of the contributions and recommendations of the annual forum in discussing youth and development issues and achievements. He also called on maintaining an open and engaging dialogue between youth constituencies at the UN and all Permanent Missions at the UN in New York to discuss mutual opportunities for collaboration.

Both, Ambassador Abdelkhalek and Elsabagh discussed the outcome of the ECOSOC Youth Forum, the next steps toward the High-level Political Forum in July, and the SDG Summit during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.
