Train collision in Alexandria sees 40 injured, no deaths reported

A train collision that took place on Tuesday in the northern city of Alexandria saw 40 people injured, according to the Ministry of Health and Population.

A total of 27 ambulances were sent to the site of the accident to transfer those injured to the Ras Al-Tin General Hospital and the Jamal Hamada Central Hospital.

In a statement, the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) said that the accident occurred at 9:15 at Alexandria train station, when a train leaving the station heading to Cairo hit a tractor moving behind it.

The last carriage was separated from the train, and the injured people were taken to hospitals. Most of the injuries were minor bruises, and only three people suffered from broken bones, the ENR said, adding that a number of employees were suspended and transferred to the Public Prosecution.

The accident comes only one day after a freight train collided with two minibuses which had stopped too close to the rail tracks in a residential area of Helwan, just outside Cairo. Two people were killed and six others were injured in the accident.

A total of 16 ambulances were sent to the Helwan accident site, to transfer the injured and the dead to hospital. The injuries were minor and varied between fractures and bruises.
