Egyptian Armed Forces managed to thwart a jihadist attack on a security checkpoint near Bir al-Abd city in North Sinai, the military spokesperson announced on Tuesday.

Jihadists used four vehicles and suicide bombers in the attack, the statement added.

“Security forces of the checkpoint in cooperation with the Air Force managed to kill 18 jihadists, including a suicide bomber, and destroyed the four vehicles, three of which were booby-trapped,” the spokesperson continued.

However, two army personnel were killed and four others injured in action while chasing the terrorists.

“Egyptian Armed Forces affirm their continued efforts to secure all strategic fronts of the state, uproot terrorism, and ensure security and safety of all Egyptians,” the statement read.

A state of emergency has been in force across North Sinai since October 2014. Moreover, the Egyptian army and police forces launched a comprehensive campaign in February 2018 to confront militants in the Sinai Peninsula, Nile Delta region, and the Western Desert.
