Environment Minister follows up on GCF projects

Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad met via videoconference, on Saturday, with the National Designated Authority of the UN Green Climate Fund (GCF), to discuss the status of GCF-approved projects.

Representatives from the Ministries of Planning, Agriculture, Industry, Electricity, Irrigation, and Foreign Affairs were also present at the meeting. The discussion addressed the readiness of the GCF’s programme for technical support and capacity building of Egyptian bodies involved with combating climate change. 

During the meeting, the United Nations Development Programme’s enhancing climate change adaptation project was also discussed. The project aims to support the process of adaptation to climate change, integrate adaptation programmes in planning and budgeting in the public and private sectors. It also looks to enhance institutional and human capacities, whilst also developing an integrated national assessment of climate risks. 

It also aims to identify priority areas for adaptation, as well as preparing a strategy for financing projects to adapt to climate change, as the project’s budget amounts to a $3m. 

The Enhancing Climate Change Adaptation in the North Coast and Nile Delta regions in Egypt Project (ECCADP) was also discussed during the meeting, as well as expanding constructing renewable energy projects. 

The meeting dealt with the financing of climate adaptation and mitigation efforts in related fields, such as sustainable development and transportation, with a budget of $152m.
