Al Ahly’s football management committee, headed by the club’s president Mahmoud Al-Khatib, announced on Tuesday signing a two-season contract with Patrice Carteron to lead the football team’s coaching staff, replacing Hossam Al-Badry, who left his position last month following a deterioration in the team’s performance and results.
The Cairo-based club announced that the Frenchman will arrive in Egypt on Wednesday, coming from the United States where he was the head coach of Phoenix Rising.
Carteron, 47, has a successful record of coaching that started in 2007 with AS Cannes, after which he moved to Dijon FCO. During his time with Dijon, he got the club promoted to the top French football division. In 2012, he parted company with Dijon, which had been relegated from the top division Ligue 1.
Carteron was then named as the head coach of Mali, where he led the African team to finish third in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
The brightest period in Carteron’s coaching career thus far was with Congolese club TP Mazembe. He led the club to two league titles, three African Super Cup titles, and one African Champions League title.
In 2016, Carteron had his first coaching experience in Egypt with Wadi Degla. The team won 20 of their 30 league matches during Carteron’s tenure. He moved to the Saudi Professional League’s Al-Nassr in 2017, helping the team qualify for the Asian Champions League.
Al Ahly won the 2017/2018 Egyptian Premier League, marking its 40th league title.
