Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal headed on Tuesday to Geneva to participate in the meetings of the 138th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which will be held from 23 to 26 March.
Abdel Aal will participate in meetings as the head of the Egyptian delegation and the representative of the Arab Group. He is also expected to hold a number of meetings with officials from across the globe on the sidelines of the conference.
In 2017, the 137th session of IPU was held in Russia’s Saint Petersburg, where Abdel Aal met with
with Saudi Shura Council Speaker Abdullah ibn Muhammad Al ash-Sheikh to tackle boosting parliamentary ties, and the Mexican delegation, led by Gabriela Cuevas, who was nominated to head the IPU, as well as Burundi Parliament Speaker Pascal Nyabenda, to discuss ways of fostering mutual ties.
Cuevas was elected in October 2017 to head the IPU, which convenes annually to cover key issues such as strengthening parliamentary contribution to the Global Compact for Migration, sustaining peace as a vehicle for achieving sustainable development, tackling women’s underrepresentation in politics, engaging the private sector in the development of renewable energy, and building sustainable and resilient societies.
