EGP 19.3bn cost of petroleum products transportation in 2016/2017: CAPMAS

The total cost of transportation of petroleum products in Egypt reached EGP 19.3bn in 2016/2017, up from EGP 18.1bn in 2015/2016, an increase of 6.5%, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) annual report on the means of transporting petroleum products issued Monday.

The total transported quantities of petroleum products by various means of transportation in Egypt reached 147.1m tonnes in 2016/2017, down from 150.4m tonnes in 2015/2016, registering a decline of 2.2%.

The highest amounts were transferred by the Sumed pipeline, as it alone transferred 66.3m tonnes in 2016/2017 at a transfer cost of EGP 37 per tonne, compared to 65.8m tonnes transferred in 2015/2016 at a  cost of EGP 36 per tonne—an increase of 0.7%.

CAPMAS said that the total amount transferred by lorries reached 18.1m tonnes in 2016/2017, up from 17.6m tonnes in 2015/2016—an increase of 3.2%. The transfer cost by lorries reached EGP 41 per tonne in 2016/2017, compared to EGP 45 in 2015/2016.

The total number of both the main and internal oil pipelines of the Petroleum Pipelines Company (PPC) reached 58 lines with a total length of 5,600 kilometres in 2016/2017.

The CAPMAS pointed out that the total transferred quantities of petroleum products, including crude oil, condensates, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), through the PPC’s lines reached 56.9m tonnes in 2016/2017, at a cost of EGP 354, 180, 73, and 256 respectively. Meanwhile, the total transferred quantities through the PPC’s lines recorded 61.1m tonnes in 2015/2016.

The CAPMAS stated that transferred crude oil and other petroleum products by coastal tankers reached 5.4m tonnes in 2016/2017, of which 5.3m tonnes were crude oil and 0.1m tonnes were other petroleum products, at a transport cost of EGP 66 per tonne.

The lowest amounts were transferred by railway tankers, where they transferred 414,300 tonnes of petroleum products in 2016/2017 at a transport cost of EGP 87 per tonne, compared to 446,100 tonnes in 2015/2016 at a cost of EGP 19 per tonne—a decline of 7.1%.
