Ford Motor Company handed over two financial grants worth $15,000 to support two environmental projects in Egypt: the environmental education project in Giza and the project working with the fishermen of South Sinai to preserve coral reefs.

The non-governmental organisation Toraseyat had submitted its project within the environmental education category, with a focus on air and water pollution in Egypt’s Giza area. Through the $9,000 grant, the programme will promote eco-friendly products and proper disposal of biological waste, within a range of comprehensive efforts to implement solutions that improve the quality of life in local communities.

Meanwhile, Christopher Narinder Singh Bunyan, from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, submitted an idea to cooperate with the bedouin communities, which depend on fishing in South Sinai, to preserve coral reefs, depending on their culture and traditional knowledge.

The project won the special community participation category grant of $6,000.

Director general of Ford in North Africa Bernat Szabo, deputy director of Ford in North Africa, Ashraf Bostany, and Auto Jameel’s regional director in North Africa, Tarek Abdul Latif, handed the grant to Hemmat Salah al-Din Ismail from Toraseyat.

Apart from Egypt, the winning participants from Kuwait, Qatar, Lebanon, Morocco, and Tunisia received their grants totaling $12,000 as part of Ford’s Conservation & Environmental Grants.

After 16 years, Ford’s Conservation & Environmental Grant has become one of the largest initiatives of its kind in the region, with the aim of enabling individuals and NGOs to preserve the environment in their areas.

Since its establishment in the Middle East and further expansion into North Africa, the programme provided grants worth $1.64m to more than 200 projects.
