Head of the Lawyers Syndicate Sameh Ashour ordered the syndicate’s Freedoms Committee in a statement on Sunday to follow up on the disappearance of Mohamed Sadek.
Mohsen Abo Saada, member of the Freedoms Committee at the Lawyers Syndicate, was quoted in the statement as saying that the committee will follow up on the case and undertake needed legal measures to ensure Sadek’s safety and rights.
Sadek has been missing since 30 August, the Front to Defend Egyptian Lawyers (FDEL) said previously. According to FDEL, Sadek was heading to the Giza railway station last Tuesday, and was allegedly detained, yet his whereabouts remain unknown.
In early September, FDEL launched an online campaign calling for the release of Sadek. The campaign said that Sadek has been defending prisoners held in the maximum security Torah prison, known as Al-Aqrab prison.
Since 2013, this prison in particular has been a destination for hundreds who were tried on terrorism-related charges.
Enforced disappearances have become a frequent occurrence over the past three years. The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) filed in January a list of 190 missing citizens. The Interior Ministry has so far responded regarding 120 of the mentioned names.
On Sunday, the Doctors Syndicate sent an official letter to the Interior Ministry to follow up on missing doctor Omar Abdel Wahab.
Abdel Wahab went missing on 28 August, while he was heading to work in Al-Haram district, and his phone was switched off a few hours later.
