Russian airborne forces’ deputy commander for peacekeeping operations Alexander Vyaznikov announced on Tuesday that airborne forces units will participate in joint Egyptian-Russian drills to combat terrorism, according to Russian news agency Sputnik.

Vyaznikov said: “There will be negotiations about these drills, and they will be held in Egypt. Our 106th Tula airborne division and force will be involved in these drills.”

Egyptian-Russian bilateral relations have been fostered over the past few years. In March, Minister of Military Production Mohamed Al-Assar headed a delegation to Russia to discuss the military cooperation between the two countries.

The unrest in Sinai has increased following the ouster of former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi. Clashes between security forces and militants in North Sinai are ongoing, leading to several deaths from both sides.
